A woman was jailed for tricking her friend into giving her over £90,000 by pretending to be a man in love with her
Khurram posed as a handsome man on WhatsApp, claiming to be in love. For 20 months, she sent her friend pictures of a young man, saying he needed private cancer treatment.
The victim, who had known Khurram for 20 years, believed every word. She thought she was going to marry this fake guy, Etesham Khan. Khurram took advantage of her friend’s trust and vulnerability.
In total, the victim made 52 payments, all going to Khurram or her family. The court heard how Khurram even threatened to expose the scam after the money ran out.
The victim felt betrayed and devastated, saying Khurram took away her health and wealth. She even mentioned feeling suicidal at times.
Khurram was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison. The judge called it one of the most despicable cases he had seen. He noted how Khurram knew her friend’s struggles and exploited them.
This case serves as a reminder to be cautious about who we trust online. It’s a tough lesson for everyone involved.
