A man from Sunderland got caught fly-tipping. CCTV filmed him dumping waste behind his house.

It happened on October 28, 2022, around 8 AM. Malik Yansane was seen on Athol Road leaving waste in the street. The city had a camera watching for illegal dumping.

Signs warned about the CCTV, yet Yansane left sofas under the camera. Officers found more junk too, including a chair, a container, bags, and boxes.

Officers investigated and looked through the trash. Then, they removed it quickly. Yansane admitted to dumping waste there after seeing himself in the video.

He could have paid a fine of £300. He got the notice on January 18, 2023, and had ten days to pay. Reminders came on January 31 and February 8, warning about legal action.

He didn’t pay, so the council took him to court.

The court case was on February 4, 2025. Yansane admitted to dumping the items without permission or arranging collection. He had even reported dumping before.

The court found Yansane guilty. He must pay a £300 fine, £245.21 for clean-up costs, and £450 for the legal investigation, owing £995.21 in total.

A council member said dumping will not be tolerated. They will investigate and prosecute offenders.

The council wants to keep the community clean. They want residents to dispose of waste properly.

People can report dumping online or by calling 0191 520 5550.
