A planning committee in Solihull approved a home extension, apologizing to a neighbor worried about potential issues with the property.
During the consultation, nine objections were raised. Neighbors worried it might turn into a house of multiple occupancy (HMO). One neighbor, Mr. Malen, expressed his frustration. He said if the extension got the green light, he and his family might have to move away.
Councillor Laura McCarthy, representing Elmdon, pointed out that this application was similar to a previous one that was rejected. She voiced concerns that this was just a way to sneak in the same request again.
The committee’s chairman, Councillor Bob Grinsell, acknowledged the objector’s worries. He explained that they had to follow planning laws, which made their job tough. Councillor Dave Pinwell agreed, saying he saw no reason to deny the application.
While some members wanted to limit the potential for an HMO, the planning officer said that was unreasonable. When it came time to vote, the decision was made with two in favor and seven abstaining.
In the end, the chairman told the objector that, with regret, the extension was approved. He added, “We hope you don’t move out of Solihull.” The meeting took place at the Civic Suite on January 8.
