Peterborough is ranked as one of the UK’s most dangerous towns, with the highest crime rate in Cambridgeshire.
Areas are split into community safety partnerships. These areas match local authority borders. Crime rates help compare different places. Rates show crimes per 1,000 residents, allowing fairer comparisons, even with different populations.
Peterborough has the highest crime rate in the county, with 105 crimes per 1,000 people, which is about one crime for every nine people. Peterborough ranks 53rd highest in England and Wales. Cambridge follows with 103 crimes, and Fenland has a rate of 75 crimes.
South Cambridgeshire is the safest in Cambridgeshire. The rate is 44 crimes per 1,000 residents there, meaning one crime happens for every 23 people. This area ranks as the 16th safest location nationally.
National data shows some crime trends. Homicides decreased by four percent. Knife offenses increased by four percent, firearm offenses went up by nineteen percent. Robbery rose four percent and shoplifting soared twenty-three percent.
The Crime Survey for England and Wales also released data. It uses interviews to measure crime’s impact and finds 9.5 million “headline” crimes. These involve theft, fraud, and violence and is one million more than last year. Fraud caused most of this rise, increasing by 19 percent. Harassment affected 4.4 million people; domestic abuse impacted 2.2 million; stalking affected 1.6 million; and sexual assault, 1.0 million.
