McDonald’s is appealing Walsall Council’s decision to deny a new restaurant at Buffet Island, citing health concerns and local traffic issues as key points of contention.
The Planning Inspectorate confirmed the appeal was validated on January 31. They will set a date for a public inquiry once a planning inspector is assigned.
McDonald’s is challenging two main reasons for the refusal. One is the impact on local health and obesity, especially near schools and other takeaways. The second is about how the new restaurant might affect nearby businesses.
The restaurant plans include 46 parking spaces, a bike rack for 10 bikes, a play area for kids, and charging stations for electric vehicles. It would also create 120 jobs once completed.
This site used to be a Chinese restaurant until it closed in 2020. Before that, it was a popular pub known as Schofields and later The Trees.
Walsall Council turned down the application in July last year. They were worried about traffic and congestion, especially at the busy roundabout nearby.
During the meeting, McDonald’s spokesperson Catherine Chapman shared data from traffic surveys. She argued that the new restaurant wouldn’t severely impact local roads. The council’s decision to refuse the plans was met with applause from the audience.
