After experts questioned Lucy Letbys guilt, a victim’s mom said, “We already have the truth,” criticizing the experts publicity stunt and disrespect.
Dr. Shoo Lee spoke at the press conference on February 4th. He said experts think care, not Letby, caused harm. They blamed bad care or just chance, asserting they wanted to comfort families and assure them they know the truth.
He mentioned a 1989 study on air in babies’ blood, which was used a lot in Letby’s first trial. He said their goal was giving truth, not causing pain. He asserted they are here to state the facts.
The mom disagreed strongly, saying they show disrespect, which is upsetting. She stated that they said families want truth, but “we know it.” She trusts the British justice system and the jury.
She feels certain the jury made the right choice. “This expert panel does not speak for us,” she added, reiterating, “We have the truth already.” It’s misleading to claim new evidence emerged.
She argued jurors carefully looked at every part of the case. Letby’s lawyer, Mark McDonald, disagrees with the mom, saying his evidence is not a retread and claims the defense could not call experts.
He said the jury only heard prosecution experts, whose fields were babies, kids, and disease. “So yes,” he says, “this is fresh and new evidence.” He argues it is powerful because of who gave it and that the jury never heard it.
He questioned some evidence, like Letby’s note that said “I am evil, I did this,” as well as her crime souvenirs and searches of parents of victims on Facebook. McDonald insists everything has a good reason.
He says guilt came only from medical stuff, but that stuff is now disproven. Lucy Letby, 35, might get 15 life sentences. Courts found her guilty of hurting babies, and she targeted one twice.
She failed twice to appeal the convictions last year. The first appeal covered seven murders and attempted murders. Another trial found her guilty of trying to kill one girl. McDonald hopes this new stuff will send Letby’s case back to court, with the expert panel helping at no cost.
The CCRC is checking her case now, looking at possible wrong court decisions. The case has lots of complicated evidence, and the CCRC cannot say when they will finish their work.
