In Dudley, residents on benefits face tough challenges during the cost of living crisis, with many struggling to navigate the complex system and avoid eviction.
Dudley: People here on benefits are really struggling. The cost of living crisis makes life tough. Many face unexpected changes, like illness or job loss, and feel overwhelmed.
Ferristina Peart-Smith, a 57-year-old mother, is worried about losing her home. She might end up on the streets. She has health issues and is trying to stay strong for her son, who has mental health problems.
She fears eviction could worsen his condition. “I’m more worried about him than myself,” she said. “Everything could escalate.”
Paul, from Stourbridge, lost his job due to a back condition. He found the benefits system confusing, even with computer skills. He needed help from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, spending five hours on the phone to get his claim sorted.
“It felt like a foreign language,” he explained. “I was overwhelmed with paperwork and bailiff letters.” He fell behind on council tax while working, and the CAB helped him avoid jail.
Paul said, “Without their support, I would have faced depression or worse.”
