Coventry: New technology is being used to make West Midlands roads safer. Transport for West Midlands is installing AI-powered sensors in 40 locations. These sensors will track near misses to help identify where safety improvements are needed.

Near misses include close calls between vehicles and pedestrians or cyclists. West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker and Road Safety Commissioner Mat MacDonald believe this tech will help them act before accidents happen.

One sensor is already in place on Grange Road in Coventry. It recorded several near misses, prompting plans for safety measures. Although road deaths have dropped by 12% in the last two years, 43% of fatalities were pedestrians.

This initiative is part of a larger plan called Vision Zero, aiming for no collisions by 2040. Mat MacDonald emphasized the importance of this technology in preventing serious injuries and deaths on the roads.

Mr. Parker noted that AI is being used at high-risk junctions. It helps them understand risks better and take action before accidents occur. The goal is to improve road safety proactively.

With 40 sensors across the region, the data from Coventry will guide safety improvements. Plans include widening pavements and adding pedestrian refuges to make crossings safer.

The sensors will be moved around the region over the next 18 months to gather more data. Road safety is a top priority for local leaders, and they are committed to reducing collisions.
