Bearwood’s main shopping street faces anxiety over knife incidents, yet traders find it a thriving business hub.
Bearwood: There’s been some anxiety on the main shopping street. Recently, youths were seen with knives, similar to an incident last year.
Police were called but couldn’t find any suspects. People are also worried about beggars asking for money.
I walked along Bearwood Road and chatted with shopkeepers and customers. While there are crime concerns, the street is busy with both chain and independent shops.
Hassan Mahmood from K2 Mobile has been there for 18 years. He mentioned fewer beggars and homeless people lately, which he thinks is a good sign.
Manoj Kumar at Eagles Booze noted some shoplifting issues but still loves the area. He has cameras to help catch thieves.
Cynthia Monro, who has lived in Bearwood since 2016, enjoys helping at Smiley’s Cafe. She often buys drinks or food for those in need.
She feels safe on the high street, despite the presence of homeless individuals. She appreciates the shops, even if they’ve changed over the years.
Jessica Martin, 17, works at CeX and mentioned some customers wear balaclavas. Daytime feels safer, but nighttime can be a bit rowdy.
Malo Ali from the Turkish Barber shop thinks Bearwood is still a nice place. He feels the community is friendly and crime is manageable.
Mohammed Shabab from Unique UK Beauty noted shoplifting is common everywhere. He believes the area is improving with new businesses opening.
Locals love the Oak Ca Phe, a Vietnamese cafe. Owner Van Nguyen feels supported by the community and loves being in Bearwood.
Cody’s Italian delicatessen is also popular. Owner Nicola Codinotti sees improvements in the area and enjoys the variety of shops.
Overall, traders agree that Bearwood is a great place to do business, despite some challenges.
