Bristol: This city is known for its stunning views. You can see the Avon Gorge and the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The Harbourside offers beautiful sunrises and sunsets too.

Benches are placed around the city for people to relax and enjoy the sights. They’re perfect for taking a break and letting your mind wander.

Recently, a new bench was installed in Shirehampton. It faces a derelict building on Station Road, which is set for demolition. People on social media found its location puzzling.

I grew up in the northwest of Bristol and visited Shirehampton often. It’s a lovely area, especially Park Hill, which feels more like a village than a city. The new bench is right outside a rundown nursery.

I decided to check out the bench myself. I wanted to see if it really was as silly as it seemed.

My conclusion? It’s a strange choice. Why put a bench in front of a crumbling site that’s not even approved for development?

The first time I saw the bench, I laughed. It seemed like a big planning mistake. The second time, I laughed again. At least it made me smile, even if it was for the wrong reasons.

The view from the bench is odd. The old nursery is falling apart, and there are rotting greenhouses nearby. The area isn’t even properly gated off, so you could walk through if you wanted.

Surrounding the bench is mostly residential housing. There’s a closed toilet block and a couple of shops, but that’s about it.

The paving around the bench looks brand new, which feels out of place in Shirehampton. I’m sure that won’t bother many people.

It’s just strange how misplaced this bench feels. If the planned housing development were already built, it might make sense, but it hasn’t even been approved yet.

Was the bench meant for a different spot? Did they install it wrong? There are so many better places for a bench in Shirehampton.

If you enjoy looking at decaying greenhouses, this bench might be perfect for you.

As for comfort, the bench is fine. It’s like any other bench, but instead of a nice view, you’re staring at a rundown site. I’ve jokingly renamed it the ‘Bench of Dreams’ after my visit.

This bench has been the subject of online ridicule since it was installed, and I can confirm it’s well-deserved.
