Sandwell: UK households on DWP benefits can cut monthly costs with council tax discounts. If you have a low income, check if you qualify for a reduction. The average household pays around £2,000 a year, and prices are set to rise in April.

Some groups already get reductions, like pensioners, people living alone, and students. Others should contact their local council for help. Each case is looked at individually.

Families could save up to 100% on their council tax, which could mean an extra £2,000 in their budget. This is great news amid rising living costs.

The Government says you might qualify if you’re on a low income or receive benefits. You can apply whether you own or rent your home, or if you’re working or unemployed.

Citizens Advice explains that you need to apply to your local council for Council Tax Reduction (CTR) or Second Adult Rebate. Make sure to check your eligibility first.

If you qualify for CTR, apply as soon as possible. You can even apply early if you know when you’ll be eligible. This way, you won’t have to wait long for your reduction.

You can apply for CTR up to eight weeks before you start paying council tax on your home, even if you haven’t moved in yet.
