Birmingham: Spring is almost here, and gardeners are getting ready to mow their lawns. But when is the right time to start? According to the experts at Fantastic Gardeners, mid-March is the sweet spot for that first mow.

Mowing is important for keeping your grass healthy. It helps prevent weeds and pests like chafer grubs. Regular mowing also encourages thicker grass by letting sunlight reach the lower leaves.

Timing matters! Mowing too early in cold weather can harm your lawn. By mid-March, temperatures usually rise enough to make mowing beneficial.

After mid-March, aim to mow weekly. Just don’t cut the grass too short. Keeping it at 2.5-4cm (1-1.5in) is ideal. For high-traffic areas, let it grow to about 5cm (2in).

If some parts of your lawn are shaded, keep that grass at 7.5cm (3in). When summer hits, you might need to mow twice a week. But during droughts, cut back to once a week.

By October, most lawns can take a break from mowing. However, if you live in a milder area, you might need to mow occasionally.

Follow these tips to keep your lawn looking great all year long. Happy gardening!
