Birmingham: Money-saving expert Martin Lewis has shared some great news. If you or someone in your household has a severe illness, you might not have to pay council tax. This applies to conditions like dementia, strokes, and severe Parkinson’s.

The discount is available for homes that are larger than necessary due to a resident’s disability. If you qualify, your council tax could drop to the next lowest band. For instance, if you live in a Band D home, you’d pay the Band C rate instead. If you’re in Band A, you could get a 17% discount.

Martin explained that a severe mental impairment is a term used for conditions affecting intelligence and social functioning. To qualify, you need a doctor’s certification. This is common for those with severe dementia or brain injuries.

To claim this discount, the person must also receive a qualifying benefit. In Scotland, they need to be eligible for a benefit, even if they aren’t claiming it. Benefits include Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, and Personal Independence Payments.

If you know someone who can’t claim for themselves, this could be a big help. Often, someone with a severe mental impairment lives with a partner, which could lead to a 25% discount. If you or someone you know has a severe mental impairment, check with your local council for details on how to apply.
