Fans are frustrated as Network Rail delays accessibility improvements at Bescot Station, leaving many without proper access to the stadium.
Back in November 2023, Network Rail told Valerie they’d have a solution in six months. But here we are, over a year later, and they’re still just talking about it. They say they’re in discussions about funding, but that’s not enough for the fans who need access now.
People who need step-free access have to skip Bescot and get off at Walsall or Tame Bridge Parkway. Then they have to find another way to get to the stadium, which is just not fair.
Last year, over 150,000 passengers used Bescot Station. It’s busy with fans going to Walsall FC and Aston Villa WFC games, plus visitors to Bescot Market.
Valerie is frustrated, saying Network Rail’s response is unacceptable. She pointed out that her constituents need better access and safety at the station. It’s tough for disabled folks and parents with pushchairs to use the stairs.
She mentioned that Network Rail promised a solution in six months, but now they’re saying improvements won’t happen until 2027. That’s just too long to wait for something that should be a right.
Network Rail did respond, saying they want to improve access for everyone. But right now, Bescot Station doesn’t have step-free access. They’re still figuring out what needs to be done and where the funding will come from.
They promised to keep working on it and to talk with the MP about making things better for everyone who uses the station.
