Sutton Coldfield unveils a new plan to enhance its town centre, but the bus station proposal has been dropped, focusing on smaller, impactful changes.
The Sutton Gateway Scheme, which started back in 2017, aimed to connect the town with the HS2 rail network. Now, it’s been updated with a 15-point plan to enhance public transport, walking, and cycling links. The funding comes from the government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement programme.
While the bus station next to the railway station is off the table, there are still some cool changes in store. The plan includes making roads narrower, introducing a 20mph speed limit, and prioritizing buses. These tweaks aim to make the town centre more friendly for pedestrians and cyclists.
The West Midlands Combined Authority has given the green light to the scheme, so things are moving forward. The town council has shared an update detailing the 15 proposed changes, but sadly, the bus station isn’t part of it.
The £25 million plan focuses on improving access for everyone, especially those on foot or bike. It’s all about making the town centre more inviting and boosting local businesses.
Instead of a big bus station, there will be smaller improvements like better bus shelters, improved pedestrian crossings, and a new two-way cycle lane. They’re also planning to close off some roads to through traffic to make it safer for everyone.
Politicians from all sides are backing the new plan. They believe these changes will help revitalize the town centre and make it more accessible. The goal is to create a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, encouraging more people to visit and enjoy what Sutton Coldfield has to offer.
Next up, there will be a public consultation on these proposals. The town is looking forward to a brighter future with these exciting changes on the horizon!
