Former MP Jack Lopresti has joined the Ukrainian International Legion to support Ukraine against Russia, using his political experience for the cause.
Lopresti, who used to be the deputy chair of the Conservative Party, is now in Kyiv. He visited Ukraine as an MP and pushed for more aid for President Zelensky.
At 55, he’s not in direct combat yet but is ready to fight if needed. He stated, “I am a soldier. I will do my best.”
He wants to support the brave Ukrainian people in their fight for freedom. He believes that if Putin wins, it would be a disaster for the world.
Currently, he’s using his skills from his MP days to help with weapons procurement and international relations. A senior Ukrainian leader reached out to him for his expertise.
After visiting Ukraine in February 2023, he felt inspired to help. He said, “I just wanted to help.”
Lopresti had been busy with Ukraine-related work in Parliament. He decided that if he lost his seat, he would come to Ukraine to assist in any way he could.
He saw the challenges Ukraine faced and thought he might end up in the military. In the 2024 General Election, Labour MP Claire Hazelgrove won his seat, receiving 22,905 votes, while Lopresti got 12,905. He had been the MP since 2010.
