Birmingham: Big news for Chelmsley Wood! A university wants to turn two empty units into a catering college. University College Birmingham is behind this plan.

These units have been sitting empty since the shopping centre opened in 2010. They’re located near Chelmsley Circle road. The university submitted its application to Solihull Council last month.

The goal is to change the units from retail to a catering college. They also want to add a new shop front. The design statement highlights some cool benefits.

First, it aims to reduce unemployment by providing training. It will help local businesses and fill skill gaps. Plus, it will create job opportunities for the unemployed.

Another great point is that it will inspire young folks to consider careers in hospitality. The college plans to operate from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend hours.

Currently, the units don’t have a shop front. The new design will match other shop fronts in the centre. A consultation is open now, and feedback is due by February 5.

If you want to check out the plans or leave a comment, search for application PL/2024/02970/PPFL on the Solihull Council website.
