Bristol has made the list of cities with above-average salaries, showcasing a significant pay gap across the UK.
The study shows that salaries in the South East are much higher. In fact, they’re about £12,800 more than in other areas. London tops the list, with nearly £20,000 more than places like Burnley and Huddersfield.
Out of 63 cities, only seven outside the South East made the cut for above-average pay. Besides Bristol, there’s Leeds, Warrington, Derby, Swindon, Aberdeen, and Edinburgh.
The report suggests that cities with more high-tech jobs tend to pay better. London and Cambridge have a lot of cutting-edge firms, while places like Burnley don’t.
Centre for Cities calls these findings stark. They emphasize the need for the government to step up its efforts to boost economic growth this year.
Andrew Carter, the chief executive, believes the government should focus on growth for all areas. He stresses that a bold approach is necessary.
He also mentions that 2025 should be a year of action. The government needs to make changes to planning rules to help build more housing where it’s needed.
Carter insists that the Industrial Strategy should focus on growing high-tech sectors. He believes that fast-tracking English devolution will help cities gain the resources they need for better pay.
The government has promised to put more money in people’s pockets. If they want to see real change by the end of their term, they need to act now.
