Black Sabbath is finally getting the recognition they deserve in Birmingham, becoming Freemen of the City in a special ceremony this month
Birmingham: Big news for fans of Black Sabbath! The legendary band is set to become Freemen of the City. This honor is part of a long-standing tradition in Birmingham.
The ceremony will happen on January 28. Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward will all be there. They’ll join other notable figures like Sir Winston Churchill.
Receiving the Freedom of the City is a big deal. It recognizes exceptional service to Birmingham. Black Sabbath formed in 1968 and has sold over 75 million records worldwide.
They’re pioneers of Heavy Metal, and their impact is huge. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 and won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
They even have a star on the Broad Street Walk of Stars! This recognition comes after a long push from Councillor Matt Bennett, who first suggested it 14 years ago.
Cllr Bennett expressed his excitement, saying it’s about time the band got this honor. He highlighted how proud they are to be from Birmingham and how they’ve shaped the music scene.
Black Sabbath isn’t just a band; they changed the game for Heavy Metal. Their legacy is felt in every power chord played around the world.
