A man who made a bomb threat at a hospital was spared jail due to his mental health struggles and the circumstances surrounding the incident
Lewsey had downed nine pints of cider before he got to the Royal Stoke University Hospital. He was brought in by police after threatening to jump off a bridge. Once at the hospital, he started acting out and told a receptionist he had a bomb.
The area was quickly evacuated, but thankfully, it turned out to be a hoax. No explosives were found. Lewsey was arrested and later appeared in court. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, but it was suspended for two years.
The court heard that he was struggling with his mental health. His lawyer explained that he was frustrated and just wanted help. The judge recognized that Lewsey’s actions weren’t premeditated and were linked to his mental health issues.
As part of his sentence, he must complete 30 days of rehabilitation, stay away from alcohol for 90 days, and do 200 hours of unpaid work. It’s a tough lesson learned, but hopefully, he gets the help he needs.
